The Chipper Orange Shoe

Sep. 11th, 2009

04:27 pm - Out and About

So, as you may or may not know, my local comic book shop has moved. Amusingly, they're tearing down the building it was in and replacing it with a library.

Today I finally went down to the new location of my comic shop. It's nice there, very spacious and well-lit and the owner loves it. It's also about two blocks from my favorite sushi place. I call not fair!

Today's purchases were Runaways, Buffy, Booster Gold/Blue Beetle Back-up, and Agents of Atlas. I really should just get my own pull box at this point. And I'm definitely going to ask about ordering TBP's through her, for Dark Reign: Young Avengers and Batgirl, assuming I don't start picking up monthlies for the latter. Spoilers cut, just in case )

I also got the boots my auntie gave me back from the repair shop. They are all properly heeled and very sexy. Now I just need thick socks to wear with them, as my feet are narrow and thus make it near-impossible to find cute and comfy shoes.

02:04 pm - Update!

Go click on this link and sign the letter here. Because Don't Ask Don't Tell is goddamned stupid.

...Okay, yeah, utterly failed and updating this. Whoops.

Fish camp was fun, except for the mosquitoes completely devouring my feet and ankles. Fortunately, allergy meds take the infuriating itchy away, yay! I also got to do some hammering and sawing, which was fun. The cabin on the property has apparently hit the point where they can't really do anything new to it because they're replacing all of the old boards and such that are slowly rotting. I kind of wonder how they're going to take care of the support beams, because those are definitely going to need it soon. Also, freshly gathered clams and oysters continue to be absolutely delicious; and the dog was unconvinced that my ear did not require her tongue. And I read a trashy romance novel.

A couple days later, Dana came home to visit. She's here until the fifth. We went to get her a new phone and the salesman for SOME unknown reason turned to me and started trying to sell me a new phone, which ultimately ended up in me having to run outside so that I wouldn't have my emotional freak out in front of various customers and sales people. Kind of dumb of me, but I wasn't expecting to have to deal with that, and I forgot that it's sales people's job to keep pushing after you've said "no thanks".

Saturday I played Princess Leia in Gavin's Star Wars game, which was fun. I have a slightly better idea of what I'm supposed to do now, yay!

Also, in the process of trying to come up with a journal name for Sensor from Legion of Superheroes. Why didn't someone tell me that there was a warrior-princess giant snake with the ability to hijack people's senses in comics sooner? I would have been READING those! Unfortunately, they turned her into a weird naga-thing in one of the last arcs. She continued to be badass, but isn't a giant snake anymore.

I will have to fix this in the game. Yessssss...

09:06 pm - Pretty dress day, whee!

I wore a pretty dress today! It was exciting, and I was cute. And it warmed up enough that I could take the sweater off and just wear the sundress.

We read each others' rough draft essays today in Gothic Lit. My group wasn't helpful, they wanted me to tie my essay into more of what the class read or do an overview of comics as a whole being tied into American gothic literature. No dammit, it's JUST RUNAWAYS! I am tying Runaways into the American gothic tradition! The guy in my group wrote about how Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" wasn't actually particularly gothic, so I was irritated -- he can write about something NOT being gothic but I can't write about something being gothic? Just because we read "Young Goodman Brown" for the class and we didn't read Runaways? I got an "okay" from the professor to write this freaking essay, stop telling me I can't write it, classmates!

So I didn't really get much help out of the whole thing. I'll probably take it to the professor and get some one-on-one help from her instead. One of the girls suggested that I narrow my focus down to one character or one event instead of the first story (18 issues), but dammit, it IS American gothic! It's got caves and (potential) incest and the unveiling of secrets and kids who just can't get out of the goddamned house and violations of time and space and bodies and roles and all sorts of shit! IT'S GOTHIC, DAMMIT.

So that was less than pleasing. Then I came back to the apartment and failed to do homework, and then I left early so I could do my reading in the sun before watching Blood Feast. Which was really, really bad. MST3K bad. Me and several other people had a running commentary going throughout the whole thing, and not one person told us to "shut up, I'm trying to hear!" I don't how I can write a thousand-word essay on this movie without going into slasher movies. Or possibly the appearance of at least two Playboy Bunnies acting as victims. Ooh wait, the hysterical boyfriend! Dibs!

01:09 am - Oogh.

In retrospect, I shouldn't have waited as long as I did to write my "Runaways Is Totally Part of American Gothic Literature You Guys!" essay. I should have known that the source material would be distracting.

Ah well, I haz a rough draft, with stuff that can be expanded on, and I'm already at the minimum limit. It's all good.

Also, turns out I need EIGHT fake books for my editing and publishing project, not two. Dang. Should have known it was too easy...

Watched the last couple episodes of "Dollhouse". They were fun. I <3 Alan Tudyk.

04:00 pm - Busy Week in bullets:

-Read Lousia May Alcott's Behind a Mask on Sunday. I liked it a lot, surprisingly. Turns out that LMA preferred writing "blood and thunder" stories, it's just that sentimental Little Women-type stories sold better. We've been discussing Behind a Mask all week in Gothic Lit, and Wednesday's eighty-minutes of class was spent almost entirely on whether or not it was offensive to feminists. Basically, it was everyone in the class verses this one guy, who insisted that, because the character was manipulating people for her own ends, she was a villain. At least, that was my impression of his argument. I felt it was mitigated by the fact that, if she DIDN'T succeed, she was destined to wind up in the poorhouse, assuming life as a prostitute didn't kill her first. Also, in the end, the worst harm was that the Coventry family was embarrassed, and several of them were actually better off for it. I'm not saying that Jean Muir is a shining example of goodness and sparklies, but I don't think she's particularly villainous.

-Wrote an 1000 word paper on the symbolism of a uterus shown independent of a woman's body in a mental hygiene film made back in 1966. That was...interesting.

-Went to Rowan's place for drinks on Tuesday. Got a back massage from Josh. His girlfriend is soooooooo lucky :)

-Got a bunch of books for my Gothic Lit project on Runaways. Hopefully I'll find something helpful.

-Watched Eraserhead for Trash Cinema. I really, really did not like that movie. I'm not fond of the abstract-y stuff to begin with, and all of the background noises were magnified. I do not need an entire scene where the actors have to speak loudly to be heard over the sounds of puppies suckling and squeaking. Nor do I need five to ten minutes of steam-from-a-radiator noises. Also, there was imagery that made me want to upchuck my snack. So I wound up with my fingers in my ears and my eyes closed in a dark room, and thus nearly fell asleep in self-defense. Conclusion: Do not want. So glad I didn't have to write on this one.

-Got put in groups for my Editing and Publishing project. My group is me, two other girls, and a guy (who also reads Terry Pratchett), and our unifying theme is Sci-Fi, Fantasy, and Playing With Gender. I think this is going to be fun :D

And now I'm going to do homework before CSI. Theoretically.

12:06 am - Who watches the Watchmen? That would be me.

Finally saw Watchmen. It was worth seeing once, but I don't think I'd want to watch it again -- the additional gore seemed unnecessary when the comic was already plenty violent.

Rambling spoilers go here. )

The Dan Savage thing was fantastic, as expected. I managed not to drool on myself laughing, which I always count as a success.

Yesterday, I wrote almost a thousand words on about a minute's worth of film from the movie Maniac. I was pretty pleased with that.

Aaaand I need to go finish Rappaccini's Daughter. Nathaniel Hawthorne is entirely too fond of commas in this story.

01:07 pm - Yay, Friday!

Man, I'm going to LOVE Fridays. All done at 11.20AM, on top of the usual "Fridays are awesome"? Winzor.

My Gothic Lit. professor now has the first trade of Runaways. And she apparently has a kid at home who is devours graphic novels/comic books. Mwahahahahaha, mine is an evil laugh!

Also, I think Susan Sto Helit in the Discworld books might have an allusion to Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The BirthMark", sorta-kinda. Granted, the titular birthmark disappears when Georgiana blushes, and Susan's appears when she blushes, but the blushing and appearing-and-disappearing makes me wonder. Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about. That is always an option.

In other news, let's hear it for Iowa legalizing gay marriage. It's officially time to get with the program, everyone!

Dan Savage is doing a talk on campus tomorrow about Prop 8. I am SO looking forward to it.

So, I haven't written anything for three weeks. Oops.

Between now and then, I passed all my classes (yaaaaaaaaaaaay!) and went to Hawaii (YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!) and started my last quarter at college (augh. Augh! OMG AUGH!)

Cut for general biggery )

And now off to make copies of things and get some graduation stuff. Also, geez, I've been writing this for about an hour at this point.

11:18 pm - Today!

OMFG SQUEE!

Sneak Peek at "Batman: The Brave and the Bold" Episode 1: Rise of the Blue Beetle

OMFG. OMFG. JAIME! THEY CAPTURED THE ESSENCE OF JAIME! I LESS-THAN-THREE THEM SO HARD! CAPSLOCK CANNOT CAPTURE THE EXTENT OF MY FANGIRLY GLEE!

I retook the philosophy midterm. I still couldn't get the tautology. It makes perfect sense when I ask the teacher about it, but when ever I come across the "if and only if"/"triple bar" thing in a proof, I can't get it to work. Well, maybe I can, I'm not sure if I'm just doing that particular homework problem wrong or what. Haaaaaaaate.

Angela and I went to a "Sexploration" thing on campus. It was a lot of fun. We sat around with a bunch of other young women and talked about sex-taboo and sociology of sex and relationships and so on. I talked a lot, and I actually brought out my Sharkie at one point. One of the other women carried rocks in her purse. I'm probably going back again. I had a good time.

Runaways comes out tomorrow, as does Blue Beetle. Squee and excitement! I'm still not sold on Moore yet, especially his Karolina, buuuuuuut it's still enjoyable.

And in conclusion: I mailed my ballot today! WHEEEEEEEEE, VOTING!

07:54 pm - I am a lazy updater

So, when did I last post? *checks*

Ooh, okay.

So, I hung around the house for a week and occasionally hung out with people. I wrapped up that week by going to eastern Washington with my dad to see my Aunt Jill (Dad's younger sister) be instated as the first female head of Washington state in the Elks Club, and the second female state head ever (I think). That was neat, and it was good seeing Aunt Jill and Uncle Mark. Aunt Jill introduced Dad to a bunch of people and I tagged along. I got to chatting with this one woman, who followed up my answer to "where do you go to college?" with "do you smoke pot?"

Yeah. I went O.o

She did give me her nephew's myspace and the title of the book he'd just gotten published, though. But that was still a weird response.

The next Monday I started taking my children's lit class at UW. It's been interesting so far -- no midterms, no finals, nothing. Just "read the assigned bits of the text book each night, think about the questions, and be prepared to potentially write a 30-minute in-class essay on at least one of the question. We read a bunch of fairy tales, and now we're reading Treasure Island.

Wednesday, I got four comic books and a haircut. Not at the same place. JOSS WHEDON'S RUN ON RUNAWAYS IS FINALLY OVER! WOOOOOOOOO! As much as I love the guy, I am so glad he's not writing it any more. It should not take 15 months to churn out six issues. I also got the Secret Invasion Young Avengers/Runaways crossover, the last issue of Marvel Presents: Young Avengers, and the Marvel Fairy Tales issue with the Young Avengers. Spoilers go here )

Thursday, the cat got a haircut. He sulked, but he's less matted and likely a lot more comfortable now. He's also still wearing his neck-kercheif that they put on him. I'm surprised.

Yesterday I hung out with Gavin and Michelle and Jeff and Gavin's niece and nephew. We watched Star Wars: Episode 1 and played a really, really awesome board game: Betrayal at House on the Hill. I hit a madman with a spear, and Gavin and his nephew spent a good handful of turns pummeling a zombie that would just not. Fall. Down. The game is awesome.

Today Mom and Dad and I went out and saw WALL-E, which was adorable and squee-worthy. My inner linguist noted with amusement that WALL-E and EVE both had labial sounds in their names, but neither of them had lips. I still need to see Iron Man and that new Indiana Jones movie.

09:32 pm - this week

So yeah, I suck with updating.

The obnoxious G.A.P. asshats showed up again. But they were only here for two days this time, yay.

This is made of awesome. Video games for curing diseases! Harnessing the free time of the internet for SCIENCE!

I had my phonology midterm on Tuesday. I think I did okay, but then, I also thought I did okay on the previous homework. We got that back today, and I got 65 out of 100. Gahh. Fortunately, we can redo it for up to half the points back. We will also be able to do the same thing with the midterm. And the professor promised to try not to go into labor while she was teaching.

We've been getting a lot of applications for [info]trans_9, the multi-fandom RPG that I'm helping run. The game itself isn't kicking off until June 16th or so, which means I still have time to decide the point of the timeline I'm yoinking Ax(imili-Esgarrouth-Isthill) from. Yes, I know, I stopped reading Animorphs years ago. I just suddenly wanted to play him. I'm also playing Paco, from Blue Beetle. We have exciting plot! :D

I'm doing a skit of The Paper Bag Princess in Japanese tomorrow. I'm playing the princess, and I have the most amount of lines. I think I have about half the lines. Fortunately, the most complex is "Anata ga kyuujo suru tsumori desu!", which hopefully means "(I will) rescue you!"

My roommates and I had to go and sign a new lease, since our building is now owned by a different company. Or something, we're not quite sure what the story is there. Either way, this new company actually sends people out to fix crap in a reasonable amount of time. It's very exciting. Anyway, we worked out a few more rules -- mainly "clean up after yourself in the kitchen". Yes, this was a bit of a problem, sadly.

Also, some of our spoons have gone missing. It's utterly bizarre.

09:06 pm - Blaaaaaaaaahh

I'm feeling pretty pooped.

My graphic novel professor, while awesome (and currently getting addicted to Blue Beetle thanks to yours truly), has decided to start off the quarter by having us read three different graphic novels about wars: Maus I&II, Persepolis I&II, and now Safe Area Gorazde. Right after having us read Watchmen. Jesus fuck, can't we toss a few things in there between them? We really don't need to be convinced that graphic novels Can Be Serious. Okay? Gahh.

I need to write a ten to fifteen-page short story for Creative Writing. I've got a couple ideas, but man, I suck at editing. I think. I have no idea. We had to edit our focused scenes, and I chopped out about a page of stuff and added some more stuff in, but I don't know if it helped or hurt. At least we've finally stopped doing that stupid "argument" prompt. Hopefully, at least. I'm sorry, but I can't just start with two characters arguing and then try to care about them. I Don't Work That Way. I start with the characters and then they can fight.

I don't care to have my complaints dismissed out of hand either, thankyouverymuch.

Japanese continues to be Japanese. We're doing stuff with transitive and intransitive verbs. Language is still fun.

Runaways has been kicked back from 2/6 to 2/20. Grr. The last issue came out in...October, I think? Since this issue was supposed to come out in late December and it's currently on a supposedly bi-monthly schedule. Joss, I love you, and the art is also incredibly fantabulous, but GET THE DAMN BOOK OUT ALREADY.

Is it can be Friday afternoon nao?

09:13 pm - busy day

Comic book release day today! I got last week's Booster Gold and this week's Young Avengers Presents: Patriot. Apparently the latest Blue Beetle came out today too, but I didn't know to ask for it. Phoo.

Anyway, YOUNG AVENGERS SQUEE OMGOMGOMG ♥!
Spoilers go here )

As for Booster Gold... well, this is pretty much amazing. All together now: "Awwwww, Booster~"

In other comics news, I lent the first trade paperback of the new Blue Beetle to my Graphic Novel professor. *spreads the love for Jaime all over the place*

In non-comics news, I made a chicken dish in the crock-pot from a recipe that came with said crock-pot. It's actually pretty good. I may try some of the others as well. It's not that much longer until I can buy cooking wine and whatnot. Amendment: Dad has informed me that cooking wine is a sin against food.

We keep working on the "argument" thing in Creative Writing. I am so sick of it. I explained that to the prof and also explained why, but she just told me to muddle through it. Understandably, I guess, but I know I'm not alone in the "are we done with this yet?" Also, I need to edit my focused scene. Argh.

06:08 pm - TGIF

Ahh, the lovely feeling of an impending three-day weekend. *contented sigh*

Of course, there's the "boo, laundry" part. And the "boo, homework" part. But those are part of life. And brand new this weekend, there's "boo, I need more ink for the printer and neither of the nearby stores-that-sell-printer-ink sell the kind my printer uses".

Also, I have to cook again, since I finished off the stew. I'm really not that in to cooking. It's sort of fun, yeah, but there other more fun stuff I would rather be doing. Plus cooking means washing dishes, and if I don't wash them right away, no one else can wash their dishes either, so it just piles up and then I have to do all the dishes.

And inevitably, someone leaves a wooden spoon soaking in the water. Gross.

So, what's happened since my last post? Cut for space )

05:48 pm - Back

Back from vacation! It was glorious and wonderful. The place we stayed was utterly gorgeous. Also, very windy. But I like windy, especially when it doesn't fuck up the power.

We were there with my parent's work; there's usually a big trip at the end of the busy season -- sort of a combination "yay, busy season's over!" and "good job everyone!" There were some people that I hadn't met before, since I'm not in and out and underfoot there anymore, but there were a lot of familiar faces. I hung out with my voice teacher and her husband a lot, that was fun. Also, I had some awesome conversations about sci-fi. Dana did my hair and make-up for the big dinner night. She did a really good job on it too.

Most of the time was spent mooching around, as vacations are supposed to be spent. I got a massage, which was really nice, and this time I didn't have to go to the airport and have a mini-break down afterward, so there was all sorts of win. Mom felt kind of icky, but her room was really nice with a gorgeous view, so at least there was that.

Sharing a room with my sister makes me want to thump her over the head. Mostly because she's very loud in the morning and wakes up about an hour and a half before I do. Gahh.

Aaaaaaand LiveJournal just ate a chunk of my post. Thanks a lot, LJ. I hate it when it does that.

I read some of the books Dad lent me. Here's what I've concluded by about two and a half books in:
1) the Protagonist is far too smug for an amnesiac tricking his way into what is clearly a dangerous situation. Fortunately, he becomes less so when he fails and has to spend four years regrowing his eyeballs.
2) Of the handful of women who have appeared, only two of them have distinct personalities. One of them is evil. The other one is introduced and killed within a hundred pages.
3) Nope, still don't care about the protagonist.

In other news, we have a cover for the third issue of the Young Avengers miniseries. here is the [info]scans_daily post with the cover.

Tell me that, at first glance, the beige-ish part of Wiccan's uniform doesn't look like bared flesh. And make it look like he's wearing thigh-high boots.

Aside from that amusing bit, though, his uniform is beginning to look rather busy. I'm trying to decide between a Saruman Billy the Many Colored joke and a Joseph Billy and the Technicolor Dream Coat Uniform joke. Or maybe just comment that we know how to make a stripper version of Wiccan's costume now.

11:33 am - Why do I sound stupid when I talk?

Someone remind me never to try and summarize my writing in public ever again. Ugh.

I wrote a story as part of an English project and I'd like to think it's about the consequences of stealing somoene else's autonomy and so on, but damn if it didn't come out of my mouth sounding like anti-feminist drivel. And that threw off my summarizing another piece of my writing so I was standing up there like an idiot going "I really like this piece that I wrote, but I have no clue what it's about", only with more words and stupid-sounding. That piece was also about autonomy, like the first story AND the mini-essay I wrote about Women in Refrigerators.

Gahhhh. *headdesk*

In other news, I got signed up for all the classes I wanted, yay. I wound up going with the noon Japanese class. Hopefully I'll get to choose which exam I move and I can rid myself of that 8 AM exam. Or else I can get all of my exams done on Monday, whichever.
